Questa foto è un ricordo di una tavola di Capodanno post-sovietica. Il Capodanno in Ucraina è considerato la festa più gioiosa. Promettendo il cosiddetto “anno nuovo, felicità nuova”, durante il regime sovietico la celebrazione del Capodanno sostituiva l'inesistente e vietata festività del Natale, per rallegrare le grigie giornate senza gioia dei cittadini sovietici. Ancora oggi è la più importante festa di speranza per un futuro migliore in Ucraina.

This photo is a memory from a post-Soviet New Years table. New Years in Ukraine is considered the most joyful holiday. Promising a so-called “new year, new happiness”, during Soviet rule, New Years celebration was a substitution for the non-existent and banned Christmas holiday - to brighten up the grey joyless days of a Soviet citizen. It’s still the most important celebration of hope for a better future in Ukraine.

Ricordo della lotta contro le mosche. Per i bambini, la lotta contro le mosche era il principale compito domestico in estate. Si girava per casa con un'arma spaventosa e si schiaffeggiavano le onnipresenti mosche. Altre volte diventava un'arma spaventosa nelle mani di un genitore per punire il figlio disobbediente.

Memory of fly fighting. For children, fighting flies was the main household duty in the summer. You would walk around the house with a scary weapon and slap the ubiquitous flies. Other times, it would become a scary weapon in the hands of a parent to punish their disobedient child.
