LEAVING ROOM

Abode and/or prison

curated by Anna Bellato and Federica Brigo

A house is a basic commodity: a shelter, essential for anyone’s funadamental need. A house doesn’t only mean somewhere to live, it is also the need for and individual space and the respect for and intimate dimension. The abode, balanced and unbalanced at the same time, it is a place inside of us, full of objects, memories, inner times, it is a dimension where a private story is carried out.
If a house, in order to be called as such, needs openings (doors, windows) at the same time the closures are very evident (walls, roof, locks): in this eternal relationship interior/exterior, the house can become a welcoming place and, at the same time, a place of imprisonment.
The domestic place can be both a shelter and a prison, a place of conflicts, imbalance and barrers: not just only a physical cell where bars can simply be imaginary, social and emotional.
Women have been imprisoned by walls for ages and today houses are still controversial places.
A process of exposing these invisible cages, silently hidden, in order to ponder on metaphisical barriers disguised every day among us.

House: not just a static building, but an area built upon both positive or negative realtionships, balance and instability that deeply mark our way of being.
